Description

Apple Charoset is a traditional Passover dish served during the Seder. This sweet mixture symbolizes the mortar used by Hebrew slaves in Egypt, and its rich flavor pairs beautifully with matzo and bitter herbs on the Seder plate.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 crisp apples (such as Honeycrisp or Fuji), finely chopped
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons sweet red wine (such as Manischewitz or Concord)

Optional additions:

  • 1 tablespoon raisins
  • 1 tablespoon chopped dates

Instructions

Step 1 – Prepare the Apples
Peel (optional), core, and finely chop the apples into small pieces.

Step 2 – Chop the Walnuts
Roughly chop the walnuts and add them to a medium mixing bowl.

Step 3 – Combine the Base
Add the chopped apples and walnuts together in the bowl.

Step 4 – Add the Sweetness
Drizzle in the honey and sprinkle the cinnamon over the mixture.

Step 5 – Add the Wine
Pour in the sweet red wine and stir everything together until evenly coated.

Step 6 – Chill Before Serving
Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

Notes

Serve chilled or at room temperature during the Passover Seder.

Pair with matzo or bitter herbs (maror).

Charoset can be made up to a day ahead, and the flavors will deepen as it rests.
